Welcome to our website!

Here you can find information on the bar and restaurant, up coming live music events and B&B accommodation at The Duke of Cumberland, Whitstable......

Bar

the duke of cumberland is a big, friendly pub, right in the heart of whitstable, a few seconds from the beach.

A Grade II listed building, there has been an inn on this site for more than 300 years.  Known as the Noah’s Ark until 1747, Landlord Robert Chandler renamed it Duke William in honour of the Duke of Cumberland who, a year earlier, hadcrushed the Scottish rebellion at Culloden.

In 1748 it became The Duke of Cumberland and was used as the headquarters for the oyster and dredger men.  Fire swept through the building in 1866. The Duke was rebuilt immediately and in 1867 William Lester applied for a license at the Petty sessions for 'The Duke of Cumberland, recently burnt down but now rebuilt’.

Today we're a restaurant, hotel and bar offering great ales, tasty food, quality live music and good company.

Our simple, delicious bar menu is served Wednesday to Saturday from midday til 3pm.

Saltmarsh

Downstairs at the end of the courtyard, with a separate entrance opposite the Horsebridge is our restaurant, Salt Marsh.

After moving from its original location in Oxford Street, having opened in 2008, Salt Marsh continues to cook hearty, good value, Mediterranean style food from The Duke's downstairs kitchen.  Naturally, we use fresh produce from quality local suppliers, keeping the cooking simple and letting good food speak for itself. Salt Marsh food is made for sharing - whether you're celebrating with a large group or it's just the two of you.

During the week (Wednesday - Thursday) we serve food from our upstairs kitchen, in the main bar of The Duke. It's Salt Marsh food, cooked by the same chefs, and offers you a night of warm, relaxed dining in a slightly different setting.

A three course meal including coffee costs £25.  A nice selection of wines available from £14 - £20 a bottle

Music

music is a big part of the duke, from the tunes we play in the bar, to live bands over the weekend.

Friday nights are all about dancing and occasional Saturdays can be anything interesting or a bit different.  Sunday is always a laid back afternoon session.  From time to time we have ticketed gigs showcasing the best in just signed or touring acts.  Highlights include British Blues Award winners Ian Siegal and Marcus Bonfanti, world hip-hop duo Joe Driscoll & Sekou Keyoute and alternative folk bands Cocos Lovers and Felix Fables.

Check out our music calendar for this years gigs......
